Why does Pee Dee ground change the math?
Two things about Florence County make clearing different here. First, the ground is sand. Adding up the county’s own soil survey table, about 87 percent of mapped county acreage is sand, loamy sand or sandy loam. Sandy ground is kind to tracked machines when dry and quick to firm back up after work.
Second, the water table is not kind in winter. The county’s two most common soils, Lynchburg and Coxville, together cover about a third of the county, and both hold a seasonal water table within 18 inches of the surface from November through April. Wet-season clearing on that ground means more careful equipment work, sometimes more waiting, and sometimes more money.
