A gravel driveway around Florence has to handle sandy ground and heavy summer rain. Florence averages around 46 inches of rain a year, and August is usually the wettest month. Water that sits on a flat drive digs potholes and pulls the stone apart. We build drives with a crowned surface so rain runs to the edges instead of down the middle. First we strip the topsoil out of the path. Then we shape the ground underneath and spread stone over it in layers. Each layer gets packed down with the tracks of the skid steer before the next one goes on.
Most drives we build sit on rural lots and acreage around Florence. Some run a few hundred feet back to a house or shop. Others are farm lanes that carry a tractor and a loaded trailer. When the path runs through woods or thick brush, we clear the route first and haul the debris off. Then we cut the drive and set the stone. We also fix drives that already exist. Ruts and potholes come back fast once the stone gets thin. Washed out drives get reshaped and re-stoned so the surface sheds water again.

A new drive starts with the topsoil coming out. Topsoil is soft and it holds water, so stone laid on top of it sinks. We strip the path down to firm ground with the track skid steer. Then we shape that ground so it already carries a slight crown. Stone goes down in layers after that. We spread a layer, pack it down, then add the next one. Stone packed in layers ends up tight all the way down. The finished surface is high in the middle and falls off to both edges. Around a half inch of fall per foot is the shape we aim for.
Stumps and roots in the path come out before any stone goes down. A stump left under a drive breaks down and leaves a soft spot in the base. We dig the stumps out roots and all with the mini excavator. Old fill and buried debris get pulled the same way. Where the drive crosses a ditch, a culvert pipe may be needed so water keeps moving under it. We can set a simple pipe while we build the drive. Drive width and turnaround spots get marked before we start. We shape both while the machine is there.
Most drives around here get built on crusher run. Crusher run is crushed stone mixed with stone fines. Yards in the area also sell it as crush and run or ABC. The fines fill the gaps between the bigger pieces, so the layer packs down hard and holds. Clean washed stone, sold as #57, drains well but rolls under tires. It works better as a top course or in a soft wet spot than as the whole drive. We ask what the drive has to carry before any stone gets ordered. A lane that takes a loaded trailer needs more under it than a short drive to a house.
Depth depends on the ground and the traffic. A light residential drive usually runs four to six inches of packed stone. Soft or wet ground takes more, and it may take fabric laid under the stone first. Fabric keeps the stone from pressing down into the dirt and disappearing. Ground around Florence is often loamy sand on top with heavier clay below it. Sand moves when it gets wet, so stone needs a shaped base under it to stay put. We spread each layer at a few inches and pack it before the next goes down. That is what makes the drive hold up under weight.
Old drives fail in a pattern. The crown flattens out and water starts running down the middle. From there the stone washes to the low end. Once the surface holds water, tires punch through and potholes open up. We pull the material back off the shoulders and reshape the crown. New stone goes where the old stone has gone thin. Low spots get filled and packed down solid. Drives that end at a shop or barn usually need the pad graded at the same time. A drive that drains into a soft pad puts the water right back where it does damage.
Extensions and parking pads come out of the same build. That might be extra room beside the house for a second vehicle. It might be a turnaround at the end of a long drive, or a pad next to a shop. Farm lanes get the same treatment over a longer run. A lane grown up in brush gets opened first, and the brush leaves on the dump trailer.
