Sumter sits about 45 miles west of Florence, an easy run on US-76. We take work across Sumter County most weeks, and Sumter is a regular stop. Land around Sumter is not all one kind. Head west toward Wedgefield and Stateburg and the ground climbs into the High Hills of Santee. That ridge runs along the Wateree River side of the county for about 25 miles. Soil up there is light sand under mixed pine and hardwood. Go east instead and the county flattens into coastal plain that holds water after a rain. One lot can be dry sand at the road and soft at the back line. Sumter County housing skews old. The median home in the county was built around 1987, and streets near downtown go back much further. A brick ranch from the fifties reaches a point where repairs cost more than the house is worth. A failed roof or years of sitting empty will get it there. Mobile homes matter more here than in most counties. Manufactured housing makes up roughly a quarter of the housing units in Sumter County. Many of those units sit on rural lots off county roads and have been there for decades. When one is past repair it has to come out before anything new goes on that spot. We break it down, load the shell and the metal, and pull the old blocks and tie downs. The pad usually needs rework after that. Setting a new home means a level base and dirt that drains, which is grading and site prep. We do both on the same visit when the schedule allows.
Growth in Sumter has been moving west, toward Shaw Air Force Base. New subdivisions are going in off Stamey Livestock Road. More than 350 homes were approved there on ground that is wooded today. Private buyers follow the same line. Someone picks up five or ten acres off a county road and needs a building spot cut out. That is clearing land down to workable dirt, with the stumps and root balls gone. On lighter jobs we run forestry mulching instead. The brush gets shredded where it stands. Everything stays on site as a mulch layer over the dirt. That suits a lot you want thinned rather than stripped.
Tree cover decides how a clearing job runs. Loblolly pine is the most common tree in South Carolina and Sumter County grows plenty of it. Sweetgum and oak fill the low ground near the creeks and bays. Pine pulls out fast. Hardwood with a wide root plate takes longer and leaves a bigger hole to fill. Either way the stumps have to go. Stump removal here means digging the root ball out with the excavator. Fields that have sat a couple of seasons are a different job. Those get brush hogging, which cuts the growth down without touching the dirt underneath.
