Tree removal for Florence yards and lots

Tree removal in Florence, SC starts with a close look at the tree and the ground around it. Most yard and lot trees here come down with our New Holland mini excavator and a saw. For a smaller tree we push it over or dig it out root ball and all in one pass. A bigger tree gets cut down in sections with a saw when the excavator cannot push it.

The trunk, the limbs and the brush all load into our dump trailer and leave the property. We can dig the stump out on the same visit, so there is nothing left to mow around. When the whole lot needs opening up, we clear the brush and small growth with the skid steer. Then the ground gets pushed back level, and the spot blends in with the rest of the yard.

How do you take a tree down with an excavator?

The excavator does the pushing, so the tree comes over from the base instead of the top. We set the machine on the side we want the tree to fall toward and give it steady pressure. The roots break loose, the root ball lifts, and the tree comes down in the open. That keeps the fall clear of the fence and the driveway when the lot is tight.

A tree too big to push gets cut down in sections with a saw from the ground. We take the top off first, then work down the trunk until only the stump is left. The stump comes out the same day, the wood goes in the dump trailer, and the ground gets pushed level. Quotes are free and priced on site, so ask us for a free estimate before you plan the work.

Which trees can you take down and which need a climbing crew?

This method fits trees that have room around them and a clear place for them to fall. Yard trees in an open lawn work, and so do trees along a fence line or out on a lot. Dead pines standing out in the open fit well, because the drop zone is already there. Small trees and saplings come out fast, and we can take several of them in one visit.

A tall tree leaning over a house, a garage or a power line is a different job. With no drop zone under it, that job needs a climbing crew, and we say so at the estimate. Where the spot becomes a pad, a driveway or a fence line, the stump goes in the same visit. That leaves ground we can level and grade instead of a stump for the next trade to work around.

What trees come down most around Florence and the Pee Dee?

The South Carolina Forestry Commission counts loblolly pine as the state's most common tree species. It is half of the live trees the agency measures, with sweetgum second at about ten percent. Clemson Extension lists water oaks, pecans and pines among the yard trees South Carolina lost during Hurricane Helene. Clemson also calls Pee Dee soil sandy, and that sand is what the excavator digs through here.

We take these trees down around Florence and out to Darlington, Hartsville and Lake City. Inside the city, the Florence Unified Development Ordinance sets tree standards for new development. It exempts individual lots of record with an existing single family or two family home. The downtown historic and overlay districts are the exception. There, removing a hardwood six inches across or bigger needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the city. We check your address before we quote.

Storm damaged, fallen and dead tree removal

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and NOAA puts the peak on September 10. Florence County has taken tree damage in two recent storms. In 2018 Hurricane Florence pushed gusts over 60 miles an hour through Florence County. The weather service logged tree damage there and called it minor. During Helene in 2024 the weather service logged a downed tree in Florence that damaged a house.

Clemson points to saturated soil after heavy rain, which lets wind push over even a well rooted tree. That is why a dead pine or a leaning tree is worth taking out before the next storm. A tree already on the ground gets cut into sections, loaded and hauled off in the same trip. When we dig the stump out, we file the SC811 locate at least three business days ahead.

How much does it cost to cut down a tree in SC?
Lawn Love puts tree removal at $385 to $1,070 across the country, with an average near $850. The same guide puts a tree under 30 feet at about $285 to $435. Lawn Love puts a tree over 80 feet at $1,160 to $2,000. See what tree removal costs in South Carolina for the full breakdown.
Do you remove the stump too?
Yes, the stump can come out on the same visit as the tree. The excavator digs it out and pulls the root ball up with it, so the roots leave with the wood. Then we push the dirt back and level the spot. That leaves ground you can mow, fence or build on.
Do you trim or prune trees?
No, we take trees down and remove them. Trimming, pruning and crown work belong to a climbing crew with the gear for it. If one limb over the roof is the problem, a tree care company is the right call. When the whole tree is coming out of the ground, that is the work we do.
Can you take down a tree next to my house?
It depends on the room around the tree. With a clear drop zone away from the house, we can bring it down in sections with a saw. If it leans over the roof or a power line with nowhere to drop, that job needs a climbing crew. We say so at the estimate.
What happens to the wood and the brush?
It goes in our dump trailer and leaves your property. The trunk gets cut into sections we can lift, and the limbs and brush go in the same load. We keep loading until the yard is clear. Then the ground gets pushed back level, so the spot is ready to mow or build on.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property in Florence?
For most homes inside the city, no. The Florence Unified Development Ordinance exempts individual lots of record with an existing single or two family home. In the downtown historic and overlay districts, removing a hardwood six inches across or bigger needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. We check the address before we quote.
